Boston: No Longer Racist
Posted by Michael Opperman in tourism on January 10, 2007
That could be the title of a tourist tract for the city. Boston has been aggressively working for the past 10 years to change the perception that the city is racist. The city has been courting black consumers. According to the Travel Industry Association, travel by blacks is growing at a rate twice that of Americans overall. The $5 billion annual spend by black travelers has the attention of Boston.
Ten years ago, it would have been impossible to find a tour of Roxbury. NBA star Bill Russell called the city “a flea market of racism.” But with the Museum of African American History and a renewed dedication to the legacy of blacks in the city, the city’s offerings have been changing. And with the election of its first black governor, Deval Patrick, the support of these initiatives arguably reaches up to the executive branch of the state.
In some ways, Boston dreams of being Atlanta when it grows up.
